Common Hardwood Flooring Mistakes Atlanta Homeowners Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Avoid costly hardwood flooring mistakes. Atlanta homeowners share these common errors — learn what to watch out for before your next floor installation.

Hardwood floors are one of the best investments you can make in an Atlanta home. They add warmth, value, and that classic look that never really goes out of style. But over the years, our team at Jake of All Trades has walked into plenty of homes where a well-intentioned flooring project went sideways — not because the homeowner didn't care, but because nobody told them what to watch out for. Here are the most common hardwood flooring mistakes we see in Atlanta, and what you should do instead.

Not Acclimating the Wood Before Installation

This is probably the single most common mistake we see, and it's an easy one to make. Hardwood is a natural material — it expands and contracts based on temperature and humidity. Atlanta's climate is notoriously humid in the summer and can swing dramatically in the winter, especially with heating systems running. When new hardwood flooring is delivered to your home, it needs time to adjust to your home's specific conditions before a single plank goes down.

Most hardwood products need at least 48 to 72 hours of acclimation inside your home, laid flat in the rooms where they'll be installed. Skip this step, and you're setting yourself up for warping, gapping, or buckling down the road — especially here in the Southeast where humidity swings are real.

Choosing the Wrong Product for the Space

Not all hardwood flooring is built for every room. We talk to a lot of Atlanta homeowners who want solid hardwood in a basement or a bathroom, and we always pump the brakes on that conversation. Solid hardwood and high-moisture areas simply don't get along. Below-grade spaces and wet areas need a different approach — engineered hardwood, LVP, or ceramic tile are almost always the smarter call.

The same goes for high-traffic areas like entryways or open-plan kitchens. Species hardness matters more than most people realize. Softer woods like pine will dent and scratch quickly in busy spaces. Harder species like hickory or white oak hold up much better for active Atlanta households with kids and pets.

Skipping Proper Subfloor Prep

A beautiful floor is only as good as what's underneath it. One of the fastest ways to ruin a hardwood installation is laying planks over a subfloor that isn't flat, dry, or structurally sound. We've seen floors installed over subfloors with moisture problems, squeaky spots, or uneven sections — and the result is always a floor that squeaks, shifts, or develops problems within the first year.

Before any hardwood flooring goes down, the subfloor should be checked for moisture levels, high or low spots should be corrected, and any squeaks or soft areas addressed. It's not glamorous work, but it's the foundation — literally — of a floor that lasts for decades.

Using the Wrong Cleaning Products After Installation

This one happens after the install is done, but it causes real damage. We hear it all the time: a homeowner mops their new hardwood floors with a steam mop or soaks them with a wet mop, and within a few months the finish is cloudy or the planks are starting to swell. Steam and standing water are enemies of hardwood floors.

  • Use a barely damp mop, never soaking wet
  • Avoid steam mops entirely on hardwood
  • Stick to cleaners specifically formulated for hardwood floors
  • Wipe up spills immediately — don't let water sit

A properly installed hardwood floor, treated right, can last 50 years or more. Treated wrong, you could be looking at refinishing or replacement in under a decade.

Getting hardwood flooring right the first time saves you serious time, money, and frustration.
