The Best Time of Year to Install Hardwood Flooring in Atlanta

Wondering when to install hardwood floors in Atlanta? Learn how Georgia's humidity and seasons affect your flooring project and when to schedule work.

If you've been thinking about installing hardwood flooring in your Atlanta home, timing matters more than most people realize. Georgia's climate — with its humid summers, mild winters, and unpredictable spring weather — has a real effect on how wood behaves during and after installation. Getting the timing right can mean the difference between floors that stay tight and beautiful for decades and floors that gap, cup, or buckle within the first year. Here's what we've learned from doing this work in the Atlanta area.

Why Atlanta's Humidity Is the Key Factor

Hardwood is a natural material that expands and contracts with moisture in the air. Atlanta sits in a climate zone where summer relative humidity can push well above 70%, while winter indoor air — especially when the heat runs constantly — can drop below 30%. That's a wide swing, and solid hardwood moves with every bit of it. Before any hardwood flooring installation, the wood needs to acclimate to the home's environment, typically for several days to a week. If the indoor conditions are extreme in either direction, that acclimation process takes longer and becomes more critical to get right.

The Sweet Spot: Fall and Early Spring

In our experience, late September through November and March through early May are the best windows for hardwood flooring installation in Atlanta. During these months, outdoor humidity levels are moderate, HVAC systems aren't running at full blast in either direction, and indoor conditions tend to be more stable. That stability helps the wood acclimate properly and gives the installation a better foundation from the start.

  • Fall (October–November): Humidity has dropped from summer peaks, temperatures are comfortable, and homes are settled into a consistent climate. This is arguably the ideal window.
  • Early Spring (March–April): Before the heavy Georgia humidity rolls in, spring offers a similar moderate environment. Just watch out for rainy stretches that can spike indoor moisture temporarily.

What About Summer and Winter Installations?

Summer in Atlanta is tough for solid hardwood. High outdoor humidity can cause wood to swell during installation, and then when fall arrives and the air dries out, boards can shrink and leave gaps. It's not impossible to do good work in summer — we manage it — but it requires careful acclimation, proper subfloor moisture readings, and sometimes extended timelines. Winter installations have the opposite challenge: heating systems dry out the air, and wood installed in those dry conditions can expand and push against itself come spring and summer. Engineered hardwood and LVP handle seasonal movement better than solid hardwood, which is worth knowing if summer or winter is your only option.

How to Prepare No Matter When You Schedule

Regardless of season, a few steps make any hardwood flooring project go more smoothly. First, run your HVAC system as you normally would for at least a week before installation — don't wait until the last minute to turn on the heat or AC. Second, have your subfloor moisture levels checked before the wood goes down. Third, let the flooring materials sit inside your home, not in the garage or on the porch, during acclimation. These steps matter year-round but become especially important during Atlanta's more extreme months.
